Whitechapel Bell Foundry
Whitechapel Bell Foundry, located at a site on the corner of Whitechapel Road and Fieldgate Street in London, ceased to trade in March 2017, after a long history of bell-founding on site dating back to 1735.
Economic and market pressures meant that there was no longer a viable commercial case for such an operation and the owners made the difficult decision to close the business. The site has recently been purchased and we were commissioned to explore the economic viability of re-opening a working bell foundry, or another foundry on a large scale, as part of a major redevelopment. We were also asked to examine the feasibility of opening up part of the site for artists’ studios and to look at potential cultural partnerships for this exciting new space.
